Minimal carbs! No sugar! Some would ask how do you even eat!
For me, I have cut out more and more sugar over the past few years. As I learned more about what that sugar was doing to my body, it encouraged me to eat less of it As I looked at the back of labels I realized how much sugar is in most boxed/bottled items. Even “juiced” fruit which is supposed to be a “healthy” choice, but when I saw how much sugar is in them I stopped drinking them. Don’t get me wrong having a juice or using a sauce you love with sugar is good once in a while. You just want to be careful how much sugar you are intaking and that can add up quickly.
The list of items that have sugar blows my mind. I love sauces to dip my food in but as I starred at each label, I couldn’t help but make changes.! My sauces are now either homemade or my go to to a good hot sauce! I mean spicy is best anyways!
Have you watched that documentary “That Sugar Film“? It shows clearly what sugar does to your body and why sugar can be bad for you. Did you know sugar drains you? It might taste soooo good, but to me feeling drained is the worst! I hate feeling like I am dragging my feet and accomplishing the bare minimum. You should watch it! It confirmed so much of my changes and encouraged me to continue to make even more! It also affects you in more ways then just making you tired. Weight gain is a big issue. The film gives a lot of insight and makes you think about what you are putting in your body.
Right now my sugar intake is so minimal. I treat myself to a dessert but that has turned into maybe every month and half. One my my best friends teases me all the time about how I rarely indulge, but truth be told I only crave it now once in a while and that to me feels really good. To get some flavor outside of water I have found flavored sparkling water gives me flavor but keeps me away from sugar. Only indulging once in while makes that treat extra good seeing that its so rare. Right now I am only eating berries as my fruit but this is because I am doing the ketogenic diet which eliminates all sugar, even the good sugar. But again my sugar intake is so minimal. No more sugar in my coffee. No more sugar drinks. No more sugar sauces. Maybe I will make list of everything I once ate and now don’t. All these choices are mine and in no way do I want you to feel you have to make these same choices, but for me I feel so much healthier. You need to do what feels best for you! I just challenge you to really look at what you are eating!
But don’t forget I said minimal carbs too! How minimal you ask, only 20 carbs a day. This choice is extra strict because of the keto diet. I would eat more if I was off this diet but regardless, did you know carbs turn into sugar? Over the last few years I have slowly cut out pastas and breads because I was having stomach issues. Bloating to me is one the worst feelings and feeling that everyday wasn’t worth it. Since cutting sugar I have learned I bloat less and now cutting carbs, my body feels so much better. Carbs aren’t a bad thing. Some would say I should have more seeing that I workout daily. Some would say having carbs boost energy. That may be the case but my energy level is much higher now that I eat less then 20 carbs a day. Cutting sugar was way easier for me then cutting carbs. I mean minimizing my intake of chips and salsa was HARD! What has happened though with cutting carbs and its taught me to really be intentional about what I am eating and where I want my carbs to come from. It makes me really think and enjoy my food more! My carb choices are savored with foods I LOVE most!
So are you wondering what the heck I eat and how do I even enjoy food if I cut out “everything” good? I laugh when people ask me this and give me a hard time. My first word is “BACON”! I feel like their eyes get big and their mouth drops open. Yes I can eat bacon. I don’t eat bacon daily but being on a hight fat, almost no carb, zero sugar and a small intake of protein, FAT is needed. So bacon is allowed! Yes I said I need to eat FAT. Weird right? It messes with your mind. Thinking you need fat to loose weight and feel energized really makes you sit down and go WHAT the WHAT? So yes I eat bacon. I also eat taco salad, steak, asparagus wrapped in bacon, eggs, avocado, cheese, fat bombs, bun-less cheese burgers, hot dogs, salad, broccoli with avocado dip and more. I am still enjoying food! I miss some foods and sometimes it’s challenging to stick to this diet but I am in the best shape I have been in years and I am the most energized. I sleep better. I struggle with depression less. Overall it the amount of good that comes from this diet that makes the sacrifices easier!
So what is the simple explanation of the ketogenic diet you ask.
“A ketogenic diet is quite simply any diet that forces the body into a process called ketosis, whereby fats are burned instead of carbohydrates for use as energy. A proper ketogenic diet calls for the dieter to consume high amounts of fat, adequate amounts of protein, and very low amounts of carbohydrates. Our bodies are used to turning carbohydrates into glucose to send all over the body as energy. When we enter ketosis by sufficiently limiting our carbohydrate intake, our livers start breaking down fat cells into fatty acids and ketones, to be used as energy.”
It’s amazing how your body can make so many changes and if you make the right choices you benefit in big ways!
