Designing a Long and Skinny Bathroom: A Classic and Functional Approach

When I undertook the design of our 50's house, the bathroom became my first project. It was about a decade ago, and I vividly remember the challenge of working with its long and narrow layout. To maximize the space, I opted for classic subway tiles that enveloped the walls, creating the illusion of a larger area. The choice of a wall-mounted Ikea cabinet not only added a touch of airiness but also contributed to the sense of spaciousness.

In keeping with the timeless and serene ambiance, I kept the paint colors simple with steam white and light green, creating a peaceful and open atmosphere. This bathroom serves a dual purpose – it’s my son's everyday space and also doubles as our guest bathroom for our frequent gatherings. As someone who values a welcoming, clean, and inspiring environment, it was essential for me to infuse the space with character and warmth.

Collaborating with Quiet Town allowed me to introduce their exquisite textiles into the space. From the captivating color blocking on the curtain to the delightful pop of green in the shower curtain liner, as well as the charming rug and towels, each piece is thoughtfully designed and contributes significantly to enhancing the allure of this narrow bathroom.

Being a plant enthusiast, I knew that adding greenery was non-negotiable. The presence of plants breathes life into the space, softening the hard surfaces and infusing it with natural vibrancy. My collaboration with Quiet Town led to a creative solution for the limited natural light in the bathroom. While I initially envisioned a long shelf of plants, the small window presented a challenge. To address this, my husband designed and printed wall hooks for classic terra cotta pots, allowing the plants to be strategically placed to receive adequate light.

This thoughtful approach not only solved the lighting issue but also added an artistic and functional element to the space. The result is a bathroom that seamlessly combines classic design elements with practical solutions, making it a welcoming and refreshing oasis for both family and guests alike.
